Margaret Swan’s sculpture explores the affinity of structures in nature to those found in architecture and the built world around us. Working with basic building materials, such as aluminum and copper sheet metal that is framed by metal armatures, she creates pieces that celebrate a dynamic interplay of lines and planes in space.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Margaret Swan earned her MA in Painting and Sculpture at Bennington College on a full fellowship, and her BFA at Syracuse University. Her awards include a New England Foundation for the Arts Regional Fellowship in Sculpture and a Massachusetts Artist Fellowship in Sculpture. Swan’s sculpture has been featured in New England museums, such as the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, and the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston commissioned Swan to create a piece in the lobby and she also has work included in permanent collections, such as the Rose Art Museum, the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Nokia Corporation, Fidelity Corporate Art Collection, Meditech, and New England Biolabs. Margaret Swan lives and works in Melrose, Massachusetts.
